Generally, therapy is short term and problem focused. Initially, we will fully discuss your concern and, most likely, take an in-depth history. In addition to our work in the office, you will be asked to carry out specific assignments to support the therapeutic process. Together, we will periodically review your progress. Therapy uses a combination of cognitive-behavioral techniques coupled with insight therapy. Homework exercises are designed to help you relax while learning new, successful sexual behaviors. For example, you will learn to maintain an erection, delay ejaculation, or focus on pleasurable sexual feelings, making orgasm easier to achieve. If necessary, therapy will go deeper, examining underlying feelings, negative childhood messages, traumatic sexual experiences and problematic relationship patterns in order to promote a positive, healthy sex life and loving interpersonal relationship. In addition, there are other principles I think are important. I use warmth, intuition and over twenty-five years of therapeutic experience to fully understand you and your problem so as to personalize your therapeutic regimen. I feel it’s important to take a sex positive, non-pathological approach and engender hopefulness and confidence. My goal is to help establish and maintain your goals.
